"To the scientist there is the joy in pursuing truth, which nearly counteracts the depressing revelations of found truth." - HP Lovecraft
In the Year of the Queen (Y.Q.) 34, a young man saw a thing passing in the sky that has since haunted the peoples of Magna Terra. This young man born in the age of sciences, rather than superstitions, sought to understand what he saw. The discovery was one that both doomed and saved his people. As they discovered means to defend themselves against the malevolence of extra-dimensional horrors, so too did they attract the attention of those horrors. The process that unlocked these worlds, known quaintly as “daemonizing”, was adopted and scientifically mastered by the people following the young man’s demise.
This is the setting of Starborn Darkness, an alternate world called Magna Terra. It is smaller than Earth and is ruled an iron-fisted monarch named the Queen. During the reign of the Queen the world of Magna Terra was Industrialized and largely educated. With a constant influx of thought, innovation, and political stability Magna Terra expected a long history of civilization. However, a young man plagued by dreams and visions uncovered occult secrets and published a book that changed history. The occult became fact, and was improved upon by overeager scientists. However, this newfound knowledge also comes with the danger of being noticed by extradimensional beings and horrors. The people of Magna Terra have both blessed themselves with the ability to defend against these terrors, and cursed themselves by lighting a candle in a dark room full of monsters. With a unique combination of Lovecraftian horror and occultism, Victorian age structure, and unquestionable Vernes/Burroughs sci-fi influences, this game will be sure to tantalize the dreamer and frighten with the unknowable.
